Stucco has to breathe. Standard house paint stops it.
Moisture moves through a stucco wall from the inside out. Coat it in a film that cannot pass vapour and that moisture gets trapped behind the paint, where it pushes the coating off the wall in sheets and can damage the stucco itself.

Yes, but it must be with a coating made for masonry — either a breathable acrylic or an elastomeric. Standard exterior house paint traps moisture inside the wall, and that is what causes the sheet peeling you see on stucco homes around Edmonton. Will painting fix the cracks in my stucco?
An elastomeric coating will bridge and hide hairline cracks, and that is genuinely one of the main reasons to choose it. How long does stucco paint last?

Do you repair stucco as well as paint it?
We handle crack filling, patching, and small damaged areas as part of the prep, and we itemise it in the quote. Large-scale re-stuccoing or structural repair is a different trade, and if that is what your wall actually needs we will say so rather than coating over the problem.
Can stucco be a dark colour?
Yes, more freely than vinyl siding, since stucco does not warp with heat. Bear in mind that dark colours fade faster under Alberta UV and show efflorescence — the white mineral bloom masonry can push out — more visibly than mid-tones. What time of year can stucco be painted?
The same window as other exterior work, roughly May to early October, but stucco has one extra requirement: the wall must be genuinely dry. After heavy rain we allow extra drying time before coating, because sealing moisture into a masonry wall is exactly the failure we are trying to avoid.
